Barack Obama ... plea for a yes vote

Barack in Wall Street plea

BARACK OBAMA and John McCain last night stepped off the presidential campaign trail to join the Senate’s bid to rescue Wall Street.

The two presidential hopefuls headed back to Washington for the Senate’s crucial vote over a new £400billion government bail-out.

Changes made to the bill in a bid to get it passed included extra insurance for bank deposits and tax breaks.

And the senators approved by 74-25 the amended bill.

The House of Representatives could pass it tomorrow.

The Dow Jones shares index closed down 19.59 points, 0.18 per cent, at 10,831.07 before the decisive vote was due to be made in the early hours.

Before the vote McCain predicted doom if the bill failed a second time.

He said: “If the financial rescue bill fails in Congress yet again, the present crisis will turn into a disaster.”

Obama urged lawmakers from both parties to unite and get the plan approved to end the crisis.

Can a US bail-out save Britain?
