UP FO THE FIGHT ... Phil Taylor wants to take on Phil Scolari
The Brazilian discovered that darts is the favourite game of the Blues players on his first day in charge at Stamford Bridge earlier this week.
John Terry and co have tournaments during the season and now Scolari is ready to take up the sport so he can take on his big stars on the oche - and he’s already been dubbed Phil ‘The Power’ Scolari.
But 13-times arrows world champ Taylor, currently on holiday in Los Angeles, was quick to defend his title.
He said: “There’s only one Phil ‘The Power’ and that’s me, so hands off Scolari.
“I’d be delighted to take him on with a game of darts and football to fight for the right to be the official Big Phil of British sport.
“But I’m sure my mate JT put him straight on that anyway. Seriously though, I hope he looks after John well, he’s a great captain.”
It is another example of darts getting a new celeb status. Arrows events are now getting the sort of A-list attention only previously seen in the Formula One pit lanes.
And The Power now reckons that darts is now the coolest sport on the planet.
He believes the showbiz entertainment of PDC darts, top prize money and Sky Sports coverage has taken the game to even greater heights than he’d ever imagined.
Newcastle players Michael Owen and Alan Smith and cricket star Freddie Flintoff all went to Premier League nights earlier this year while Terry and Ricky Hatton are pals of Taylor and love the game.
And Taylor is even staying with Robbie Williams in LA right now.
He added: “I’m old pals with Robbie, we are both from the Stoke area. He’s got a dartboard in his place so I can practice and keep up my routine.
“Robbie loves darts but I guess you could say he let’s me entertain him when it comes to hitting the big scores.
“But I’ve been totally amazed at just how attractive darts has become.
"It’s great credit to PDC chairman Barry Hearn, he has added the bright lights, venues and money to a great game.”
Taylor, 47, won the Las Vegas Desert Classic on Sunday night, beating James Wade 11-7 in the final, taking his earnings this year to over £200,000 with an incredible 11 title wins out of 16.
The battle for major wins is rapidly turning into a personal duel between him and Wade.
He said: “We’ve already been in two finals so far this year and I would imagine that it could become a big rivalry - maybe we are the darts version of Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal.
“I’ve got a lot of respect for James. He works very hard at his game and he’s dedicated, there’s little doubt he will be an even bigger force the more experience he gets.
“But there are so many good guys in the PDC who are all capable of winning titles. I’m sure Raymond van Barneveld will come back on form while Adrian Lewis is getting better all the time.
“It’s getting tougher. But I’m a scrapper, and I want to keep winning. Whoever wants to beat me has a real fight on their hands, whether that’s Wade, Barney or even Phil Scolari!"
