Osborne turns to the Doc

TRAINER Jamie Osborne is hoping the Doc has the remedy to one of the hardest Flat races of the season.

The former jump jockey will saddle last year’s runner-up Docofthebay in Saturday’s Cambridgeshire handicap at Newmarket.

The four-year-old chased home smart Pipedreamer in the annual nine-furlong charge 12 months ago.

Osborne said: “The Doc is in good order. I think he’s just starting to come right. I’m happier with him now than I have been all season and he does seem to do well at this time of year. He has more weight to carry this time but he is a nice horse.

“The key to this horse is a strong pace. I don’t think he so much runs well because of the numbers in big-race fields but more because you usually get a fast pace.

“Smaller fields can become slower and more tactical races but a strong pace is one advantage of running in a race like the Cambridgeshire.”

Luca Cumani dominates the betting for the Cambridgeshire - despite not declaring ante-post favourite Presvis.

The Newbury winner was left out of the entries by the Italian but he still has new market leader Swop (11-2) and fancied Ask The Butler (12-1).

Apprentice jockey David Probert was rushed to hospital for x-rays on an ankle injury following a fall at Bath yesterday.

Probert has ridden 39 winners this season and is fighting out the apprentices’ title with pal William Buick.
