Graham named Man of Steel

JAMES GRAHAM has pipped heavyweight rivals Jamie Peacock and Leon Pryce to be named Super League's Man of Steel.

The St Helens prop, 23, was voted as the game's outstanding star in a poll by his fellow players.

But the modest England prop reckons he has only won it because of his Saints team-mates.

Graham said: "Individual awards are all right but it's all about the team.

"It's probably something I'll look back on when I've finished playing but it probably means more to my dad right now."

But Leeds forward Peacock, who was shortlisted along with Saints stand off Pryce, believes Graham is a worthy winner.

The England captain, who won the award in 2003 and was runner-up in the 2007 worldwide Golden Boot award, said: "James has had a great year.

"He has a great work ethic and a good engine and he's also very astute.

"Injuries in the Saints team have enabled him to shine because it's meant he's had more game time.

"But he's the sort of guy who thrives on that."

The three stars clash in Saturday's Grand Final at Old Trafford, where champions Leeds are hoping to beat Saints for a second successive year.

Castleford and England forward Joe Westerman, 18, was named Young Player of the Year.

Catalans boss Mick Potter, who takes over at St Helens next season, was named Coach of the Year.
