PAUL WELLENS plans to wipe out his Grand Final heartache with World Cup glory.

The full-back is one of several St Helens players who will be named in England’s 24-man squad tomorrow.

And the 28-year-old is convinced it may be the perfect antidote to the misery they suffered at Old Trafford for the second year running.

He said: “The majority of the England squad will be made up of Leeds and Saints players so we’re going to have to get on together then!

“It’s so frustrating that we lost to them for a second year running but the World Cup gives us a chance to get it out of our system.

“Hopefully we will get opportunities in Australia to be part of a successful England side.

“At the moment, it’s hard to think too much about it because this is so frustrating. But pulling on an England jersey will certainly help.”

Coach Daniel Anderson was seen on TV ripping into his players at half-time in a full-scale rage.

Forward Lee Gilmour said: “It was probably the worst we’ve had all year but it was absolutely deserved.

“We started well but kept giving them piggy backs. We kept going sloppy — and that’s unacceptable.”
