Johnson joins the Heroes

RUGBY legend Martin Johnson stepped back out as a player in the Help for Heroes fundraiser at Twickenham.

The England coach made a triumphant return as the Help for Heroes XV claimed victory over the International XV.

The 2003 World Cup-winning captain was given a standing ovation from the 52,254 crowd when he appeared as a second-half replacement.

The match aimed to raise funds for injured servicemen and women.

Organisers announced that £1.1million had been raised for Headley Court rehabilitation centre in Epsom, Surrey.

Watched by Prince Charles and Lady Camilla Parker Bowles, it was a hotly-contested affair between two sides packed full of stars from the past and future, as well with current servicemen.

Lawrence Dallaglio captained the Heroes XV, who scored four tries to two to run out 29-10 winners.

He said: “The response we have had this year has been magnificent.

“We have met a lot of the guys who been involved in war and it is pretty emotional in the dressing room at the moment.

“Today the public showed what this cause means to them. It was great day.

“Today was about the servicemen and women who defend our shores. We are very proud of what they do and we wanted to show them today.

“None of the bodies were moving as fast as they used to out on the field today but fortunately our armed forces are.”
