Smackdown get best of draft

Triple H wrestles Mark Henry on WWE Raw

MOVING ON ... Triple H and Mark Henry both change shows

World Wrestling Entertainment

EVERY year following the latest WWE draft we feel like we write the same story – Raw got the better deal.

But now, for the first time ever, we’re pleased to say it’s rival show Smackdown everyone is talking about.

The Friday night broadcast gained wrestling’s biggest star and best commentator in Triple H and Jim Ross.

Hunter asked for the move because his with wife Stephanie McMahon is pregnant and the Smackdown schedule will allow him to spend more than the one day a week with her that the RAW schedule currently does.

It’s pretty clear JR didn’t. He blasted the switch in his blog and said he considered walking out of the WWE – later apologising in another post – and reportedly had a huge bust-up with an irate Vince McMahon.

But Jim is the consummate professional and will fit in well alongside Mick Foley on commentary. Triple H is a massive coup and, as Vince’s son-in-law, the one person the writers of the WWE’s second show never thought they’d prize away.

It also means Smackdown has both the company’s main champions on the show, with Edge staying put, making at least one title change certain at next week’s Night Of Champions.

They also get Jeff Hardy – probably the most popular man with the WWE fans – and SunSport’s personal favourite Umaga.

Also joining Smackdown are Mr Kennedy, Maria, Carlito, Shelton Benjamin, Big Daddy V, Trevor Murdoch, DH Smith and Brian Kendrick.

But there was some good news for Raw. They get ECW champion Kane – who must surely now drop the title to Mark Henry – and fan favourites Rey Mysterio and CM Punk. Michael Cole swaps places with fellow commentator Ross, which won’t please many, and gorgeous Brit Layla gets a higher profile.

The show also got a collection of mid-carders in Jamie Noble, Deuce, Chuck Palumbo, Matt Striker and Kofi Kingston.

As for the now champion and CM-less ECW, they get US titleholder Matt Hardy, Mark Henry, Super Crazy, Finlay and Hornswoggle.

Then, after all the wrestling, came the annual big angle with McMahon himself.

At the conclusion of last year’s draft, the WWE boss walked into a limousine in the parking lot, and the limo promptly exploded.

Vince being blown up was a storyline that looked very interesting, but then the Benoit deaths happened, and WWE rightly axed to avoid accusations of poor taste.

Since then, they’ve tried to emulate the ‘Whodunnit’ feeling with the search for Vince McMahon’s illegitimate son, but the angle fell flat after an initial buzz, with the reveal being a letdown – fans were looking for a serious angle to elevate a mid-carder. Instead we got the ‘comedy’ alternative – Hornswoggle.

Raw ended this week with Vince giving away $500,000, the biggest giveaway yet in the Million Dollar Mania sweepstakes, but as the Chairman was wrapping things up a piece of lighting equipment crashed onto the ramp.

Sparks then flew all around Mr McMahon, who stumbled off the stage, only to be pinned down by another rig.

All this was of course a work, and not reality, but although the character Mr McMahon will likely not be killed this time, it looks an attempt to recreate the feeling of the limo explosion of just over twelve months ago.

It is likely that Vince will be out for a couple of week and then be brought back on TV in a wheelchair, snarling his vow of revenge on the person who engineered this attack.

Early money could be on the Undertaker as a way of bring him back from ‘retirement’, son-in-law Triple H to work in a real life aspect or even the angry Jim Ross.

Whoever it is, we have another mystery surrounding Vince to take us through the summer.

But WWE, please don’t make it a leprechaun this time.
