Jeff hogs Joe's TNA spotlight

NO SURRENDER stuck to the standard TNA PPV structure with stipulation and gimmick matches filling out the card - and once again run-ins and interference dominated the action.

Poor booking harmed in-ring talent and the returning Jeff Jarrett hogged the spotlight that should be shining on the promotion's figurehead and champion Samoa Joe.

Perhaps Bound for Glory - the company’s answer to WrestleMania - will tip the trend and highlight some pure wrestling match-ups.

Sting kicked off the show, berating the younger members of the roster before announcing he was again going to face the TNA World Champion at BFG next month.

Due to Hurricane Ike in the United States, Booker T would not be able to attend the show.

In a challenge match, the Chirsty Hemme fronted Rock ‘n’ Rave Infection took on the masked collective of the Prince Justice Brotherhood.

This was a nice opener with Hemme and Curryman playing on their mutual attraction.

But the Brotherhood took the win after an impressive double Death Valley Driver by Super Eric put down Lance and Jimmy, while Curryman pinned the lovely Christy.

Next up we got a beer-chugging ODB battling the always-impressive Awesome Kong in a falls count anywhere brawl.

This was a superb fight, even with a few botched table moves and Raisha Saeed’s unnecessary interference.

The end came when ODB fell to Kong after a successful table spot.

The monstrous pair of Abyss and Matt Morgan had a typically hard-hitting bout with Team 3D, which saw some good power moves and violence all round.

Johnny Devine interfered as normal on behalf of Ray and Devon yet Abyss rallied and delivered a Black Hole Slam on Devon for the win.

Following a post match beat-down by 3D and Devine, Abyss and Morgan had a face-off - amid confusion over a chair shot.

The X Division Title was up for grabs as champion Petey Williams faced Consequences Creed and Sheik Abdul Bashir in a fast-paced and action-packed affair.

Bashir saw the opportunity to steal the pin and title, after the wonderful Canadian Destroyer move left his opponents vulnerable to a cheap shot on Petey.

A swift pin on Creed gave him his first TNA title.

The Knockout Women’s Champion Taylor Wilde brought in a friend to assist her in her feud with The Beautiful People and Kip James.

With Rhino outside the ring Wilde took the fight to Angelina Love.

Velvet Sky and ‘Cute’ Kip tried their best to relieve the champion of her title, but the resilient Wilde and a handy gore from Rhino on James helped even the odds, and allow her to pin Love.

Jay Lethal once more fought for the affections of So Cal Val, against one-time buddy Sonjay Dutt.

The duo unleashed a number of great high-risk, career shortening and innovative moves in the best match of the night, before Val finally turned heel on lethal to allow Dutt to win the match and her affections.

Minus Salinas, former TNA Tag Team Champions LAX did what they do best and acted as a cohesive and well-matched team against their hated rivals Beer Money Inc.

Current champs Roode and Storm took the fight to Hernandez and Homicide in what was an as expected crisp battle of wits and cunning against muscle and speed.

Jacqueline proved to be the deciding factor though, throwing powder into the previously damaged eyes of Homicide to let Roode nail the pin.

In a gimmick bout Frank Trigg and AJ Styles participated in a Mixed Martial Arts match, consisting of three five minute rounds winnable only by submission or knockout.

This was poorly received with chants of ‘Fire Russo’ echoing around the arena more entertaining than the in-ring battle.

Styles hit an accidental low blow in round two that saw the referee call for the bell and a no contest decision.

Sporting a black eye the enraged AJ used a kendo stick and took his fury out on Trigg to a huge reaction after the bout.

The triple threat match for Samoa Joe’s TNA World Heavyweight Title had a lot to make up for after the previous poorly received MMA match.

A respect-seeking Sting was involved pre-match battling Joe on the ramp, before AJ Styles stepped in to allow the bout to start.

Thankfully, the trio of Joe, Christian Cage and Kurt Angle had their working boots on and pulled off a superbly brutal, exciting and enjoyable trip through their collection of respective moves and high spots.

To chants of ‘This is awesome’, they battled in and out of the ring, trading near falls and high spots with relish.

The finish came when a ref bump led to chair shots galore. Jeff Jarrett, guitar in hand, strode to the ring and faced Angle.

After a brief stare-down Jarrett smashed his guitar over Kurt’s head to give Joe a Muscle Buster opportunity and score the pin over a bloody Olympic hero.

TNA have just announced a second date for Dublin’s National Stadium on January 17, as part of their second UK Tour.
